PC Control Mode

Newer Olympus cameras that use the USB storage class drivers - a.k.a. USB AutoConnect - must be placed in PC control mode before they will work with Camera Controller. These cameras include the C-2040, C-3040, C-4040, C-700, and E-100RS, among others.  While in PC control mode your camera can be used manually until the USB cable is connected.  When in PC control mode and connected to the USB the removable drive will be seen in Windows Explorer but it will not be accessible.  When you connect the USB cable, all camera controls will be disabled and the camera must be controlled from the PC.

Enabling PC Control Mode

The procedure to place your camera in PC control mode varies slightly between different camera models.  Most cameras use the following procedure:

The C-700 uses a slightly different procedure:

  1. If running, stop Camera Controller.
  2. If connected, disconnect USB cable.
  3. Turn camera power off.
  4. Set camera mode dial to A/S/M.
  5. Turn the camera power on.
  6. Remove the smartmedia and close the smartmedia cover door.
  7. Press and hold Menu and LCD buttons at the same time until the control mode menu appears in the LCD (about 3 secs)
  8. Set the Camera Control item to ON and press OK.
  9. Open smartmedia door, insert smartmedia, and close smartmedia door.
  10. Connect USB cable.
  11. Start Camera Controller.

In all cases, this procedure must be performed before connecting the USB cable and starting Camera Controller.

Disabling PC Control Mode

To use your camera in USB autoconnect mode again, you must turn off PC Control Mode.  To do this, simply stop Camera Controller, disconnect the USB cable and follow the above procedure to get to the Control Mode menu.  Turn control mode off and reconnect the USB cable to make the camera usable in Windows Explorer again.
