Camera Controller Troubleshooting FAQ

Camera Controller has been tested and is known to work with all of the supported cameras under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.  While we are unable to test all the cameras ourselves, we have received reports of success for each of the supported cameras.  We personally have tested extensively with both a C3030 and a C750 under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Ok, that said, here are a few tips for getting your camera to work when you have problems.  Click on a link below to go directly to the FAQ.  After you've read the FAQ, you can also use the forum to get troubleshooting help.  Please read the FAQ first as this will help avoid repeating the same questions over and over in the forum.  The CC Forum button in the header above will get you to the forum.

Firmware version OK?
How do I install Camera Controller?
Do you have the right camera model selected?
Are you in PC control mode?
Does the camera work with other software?
How about your cables?
Got a USB hub?
Getting "Duplicate filename" or "File already exists" errors?

Is your firmware version ok?

98% of the problems that have been reported are due to downrev firmware in the cameras.  Follow the firmware link in the box to the right for more information.

Don't know how to install it?

The file you downloaded from the camera controller page is a windows installer database (*.msi).  To install it, you have to have at least version 2.1 of Windows Installer.  You can find links to the latest version of Windows Installer for your particular OS on our links page.  Follow the links link in the box to the right to get our links page.  Once you have the proper version of Windows Installer, you can double click the camctrl*.msi installer database file in Windows Explorer to start the installation process.

Do you have the right camera model selected?

The first time you run camera controller, it prompts you for your camera model.  Once selected, the model is stored in the registry and you are not asked again.  If you accidentally selected the wrong model, camera controller may not find your camera.  You can correct the camera model by selecting "View/Advanced Tools" from the menu, then selecting "Tools/Select Camera Model".  You will then be prompted to select a new model.

Are you in PC control mode?

If you have a USB autoconnect camera (one that shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer) you must place your camera in PC Control mode before running camera controller.  Follow the PCM link in the box to the right for more information and the procedure.

Does the camera with with other software?

Verify camera connectivity with CaMedia or Windows Explorer.  If it works with CaMedia or Windows Explorer and doesn't work with Camera Controller, you probably have a firmware problem.

How about your cables?

Check your cables.  Make sure they are securely plugged in and make sure they do not exceed the maximum length for the type of cable you are using.  For troubleshooting purposes, you should limit your cables to the one supplied with the camera.  Once you have it working, you can add longer cables.

Got a USB hub?

Remove any USB hubs.  Officially, Olympus does not support the use of a USB hub.  Personally, I use a Belkin powered USB hub and it works fine but for troubleshooting purposes, you will want to remove the hub while testing.  Again, once you have it working, you can try using a hub.

Getting "Duplicate filename" or "File already exists" errors?

Camera Controller uses the same filename for a picture as it had when it was stored on the camera.  This can cause problems with duplicate filenames when the camera is set to "reset" picture numbering each time the smartcard is emptied.  This can be a major problem when using timelapse or webcam mode.  To resolve this issue, set your camera to "Auto" number the image files.  Somewhere on the camera menus you will find a "File Numbering" menu item that has two values - "Auto" and "Reset".  Set it to "Auto".  Note: Some cameras - specifically the C-2100 - you will have to set the "File Numbering" menu item to "Auto" and then reformat the Smartmedia card in the camera.  Other camera, such as the C-3030, do not require the card be reformatted.
